It’s all about the benjamins

No less than 3 years ago Colorado legalized marijuana. There were those that thought this was a marvelous idea and those that thought this was just a waste and everyone was going to become a pot smoking hippie. Now why would people think this way? Could it be the propaganda from so many years ago that still lingers today, could it be that there are those that are ignorant in the matter of how huge it is that marijuana was legalized in the first place? Looking at this is in a small picture gives you a small idea of what actually if being effected by this voting. Now there are those that have their views on it and see it for what it is and that is okay. Not everyone has to agree that it should be legal but the reason I feel most people look at it as a negative is there has been no publicity for the other benefits others then obviously the one for treatments medically because medical marijuana has been around for a while longer.

What I’m trying to say is do you think the voting would have been the same if the face of the vote wasn’t if your kids were legally going to be able to smoke and not get in trouble. Or if it was about the climate and how many trees we are cutting down to make paper and other materials- while looking at marijuana (hemp) as the solution or somewhat of a stopper to put us back in the right direction.

However in this world there is one thing that talks more then any vote and that is money, money makes the world go round, as much as it sucks to say. That is the truth we live in. Big companies and manufactures are scared of the marijuana movement and are afraid of losing their money. Now that is a sad thing when a company is more worried about their own financial status then the well being of the rest of the world. I want to expose how shallow and pedantic this is and that with just the help of communities that are properly educated on the hemp movement I think moods would change. When the face of the fight is a joint or a marijuana leaf you look at it as a negative change that to saving the world, saving our resources then peoples opinions might change.

Reality of Emotions

How we look at emotion takes many different forms, whether its anger, guilt, fear, apathy, or grief. These are everyday feelings that most of us feel on a regular basis. You can feel this way towards politics, environmental issue, global issues, or whatever it is you may have an opinion on. But when really talking about these types of emotions, it is leaning towards the environmental/agriculture side of things. For all of this semester we have been discussing the Anthropocene and everything that deals with it up to this point. So being that emotion was apart of that process. There is always the questions; “Could I have done more?” “What could I have changed?” These are questions that people today are pondering every minute with how our world has changed and how with evidence we can see that we’ve done so much that it is almost impossible to reverse it. Realizing that, this is where you grab the emotion of the people and show that even with little change you can make a difference it may not be a big change but it is a stepping-stone in the process of making our world a better place.

There are plenty of reasons why some people done speak up and stand up and show their emotions for their beliefs and its because they feel that they would be alone on their stand and the common whole would think differently of him. The example I use is, in elementary school there are always those kids who stand out and want to be different and believe different things. Although they rarely act on what they believe or what they want because of the ridicule or judgment they would get from the rest of the kids in their class. This is the way I see our world today, however there are the brave ones that do take action and try to reverse things that those from the past have done to enhance the Anthropocene so that it slowly develops into a better world for those that come after us.

Emotion as it relates to my topic, marijuana is a very emotional topic. There are those that are for it and those that are totally against it. This dates backs years and years ago. Just an example; George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew hemp and they were American presidents. However when talking of marijuana today you will hear two sides, Marijuana is a healer and has many benefits that most drugs that are prescribed don’t have or do it better then that drug. Then there is that that say it is a gateway drug that leads to worse things. Dating back to the early 1900’s propaganda and slander, the production and use of marijuana was immediately compromised with their ads stating that it was making people insane and that this drug was going to ruin us even though they were completely uneducated on the matter. Most of this would believe that this is the “war on drugs” that past presidents have talked about, but in all reality it is much more complex. Back during the era of slander and debauchery the timber industry was booming making millions of sheets of paper everyday. However it was discovered that hemp could make much more paper and take half the yield of the crop compared to cutting down such massive trees and damaging the forests and causing mass amounts of carbon to be released. When the timber industry caught wind they parted with legislatures to have it be illegal because of the money they were in jeopardy of losing.

When you ask someone from back in that time frame you would hear all the same thoughts because those people didn’t know any different. Over the years there has been information and knowledge bestowed upon the people to let them know that this plant is a good thing and can be used for everyday materials, being clothes, medicine, etc. And can even help our environment in a big way, which is what I want to show to my community because most people aren’t aware of what’s going on. The production of paper is a huge resource for us and we use massive amounts of trees where their once was a forest is now a tree graveyard. Trees capture carbon and keep it from filling our atmosphere, which is a huge balance in our environment that is set to be thrown off with the massive amounts of deforestation. This is where hemp plays in and letting everyone know how much damage we are doing and what we could do be legalizing marijuana for the use of everyday material we could make a huge difference.

Question to think about: Does your personal opinion on a subject really matter when that subject is affecting everyone as a whole. (looking at this in terms of the legalization of marijuana).

Cultural High

It’s alarming that we contribute such a large part to the Anthropocene. Dating back to people that lives centuries before us. It’s been an on going problem that has shaped our world into what it is now.One part that we have done a major part in altering is with the trees and deforestation.

My project that I have chose to do is over the use of trees for paper and the release of carbons as to comparison if we would have used hemp for paper and all the other resources that hemp is available for. We cant because of the slander, propaganda, and lets not forget laws that keep us from doing these things. To get a better insight on what all I’m entailing here are some images and statistics…

  1. Each year in the United States, the paper thrown in the trash represents approximately 640 million trees, or roughly 915,000 acres of forestland. (upstreampolicy.org)
  1. It is estimated that more than 1.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide are released to the atmosphere due to deforestation, mainly the cutting and burning of forests, every year.
  1. Over 30 million acres of forests and woodlands are lost every year due to deforestation; causing a massive loss of income to poor people living in remote areas who depend on the forest to survive. (http://www.climateandweather.net/global-warming/deforestation.html)
  1. Hemp fabric was smashed down into thin sheets to make the world’s first paper. 75-90% of all paper in the world was made with hemp fiber until 1883. The Gutenberg Bible, Thomas Paine’s pamphlets, and the novels of Mark Twain were all printed on hemp paper. Both the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were drafted on hemp, and then copied onto parchment. (http://www.hemphasis.net/Paper/paper.html)

Looking at some of these statistics it really shows just how ignorant our country is. One of the main reasons hemp is illegal is for these vary reasons, back when paper was high demand and they were chopping down trees left and right, someone sought to find a new way to make paper and they did with hemp but the timber and other companies were in such danger of being taken over that they started the slander and propaganda against hemp. To think that today we could have a cleaner better world if someone wouldn’t have wanted to make a quick buck of a product that could be mass produced with less environmental disturbance. It’s shown through time that hemp is good and does wonderful things other then makes paper. This is where the domino effect comes into play.

As early as 17-1800’s hemp was used. For paper, medicine, and other household utilities. We saw the benefits; we even had presidents that grew hemp (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson). Everything through that time was using hemp in the right way, and form historical records from observation they were smarter as utilizing there resources then we are today. Then as time went on we went away from those practices and all because of money and power it went away and big manufacturing companies and timber mills took over and slandered the hemp name and ultimately pushed us into the world we are now.

———– Its time for change. Its time for the ignorance to stop. Time for the dollar to becomes less important and the lives of the billion start to come first. ——————–
